SIOPA SEMINAR EVENT SUMMARY – UNLOCKING AND ILLUMINATING HUMAN POTENTIAL THROUGH LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Following their highly successful launch event, SIOPA were pleased to welcome endorsed Organisational Psychologist Jan Sipsma to Flux on 6th June 2017.
In his interactive address, Jan opened his presentation with a strong message:
“The context has changed and will continue to change at an increasing rate, but the methods we are using to develop leaders have not changed much”
This statement provided the momentum to deconstruct a series of ideas on how to raise awareness on the impact of good leadership and the difficulty involved in developing the skill sets required to lead the world and the future.
Jan spoke candidly on his experience in developing leadership capability within organisations and the unbridled complexity involved in understanding individual mental process capability. Jan shared his views on the definition of work, adaptive competencies and referred eloquently to Elliott Jaques ‘Stratified Systems Theory’ (1989). Stratified Systems Theory (Jaques, 1989) defines work in seven strata’s based on decision-making complexity.
The presentation concluded with a review of statements that highlighted the need to focus development on horizontal and vertical levels, emphasise the importance on allowing individuals to transfer ownership in their development and, as human behaviour specialists our understanding of individual mental models is critical in unlocking complexity and realising human capability. Jan graciously facilitated an extensive Q&A session that offered audience members an opportunity to challenge and speak to his theories which provided plenty of discussion to the delight of SIOPA guests.
The audience found Jan to be “inspiring” and “highly knowledgeable” with many guests commenting on Jan’s alluring ability to “engage the audience and generate incredibly valuable conversation”. Quantitative feedback gathered from the audience rated this event four out of five stars.
SIOPA look forward to inviting industry professionals to our first TechNet event on Tuesday 4th July at The Western Australian Club (L11, 12 St Georges Terrace, Perth) proudly supported by Downer Mining. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at HERE.
